Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce to students basic skills for consecutive interpretation.
This skills will gradually lead to the ability to interpret accurately and fluently from English into Chinese a short oral message on general topics without notes or message 2-3 minutes long with notes. Shorter interpretation from Chinese into English will also be practiced. Skills to be trained include: listening comprehension, recall, paraphrasing, taking down numbers, summarizing, public speaking, sight translation, note-taking, etc.

Specific Tasks:
1. Weekly home-reading of assigned materials and presentation* in class.
2. Public speaking*.
3. Practice of the above-mentioned skills.
4. Interpretation practice and evaluation.

*Only notes are allowed for the presentation. Reading from the text is not acceptable.

Grading:
Attendance and Participation: 30%
Class performance (including preparation): 70%
